I remember the first time I tasted a brigadeiro. It was in a friend’s birthday party, when I was just a little girl and since then that special chocolate bonbon accompanied me on many more parties to come. It was always a hit in my birthday parties. It is a success in any kind of party.
My friend’s mother happened to be Brazilian, our neighbor and our family doctor. So, immediately after that first party, and because I wouldn’t stop talking about the exquisitely delicious treat, my mother asked our friend for the recipe. And that’s how I’ve been mastering the skill of making the perfect brigadeiros since my childhood.
This is actually a very kid friendly recipe, especially on the part of rolling the balls with the hands (previously washed, of course). I know in Brazil there is no children party without brigadeiros and in Portugal is well spread too.
The traditional recipe says the balls should be rolled on chocolate sprinkles. Nowadays there are infinite variations, that include coconut flakes, simply cocoa powder (more like a truffle), crystal sugar, crushed nuts and many more.
I couldn’t find any good quality chocolate sprinkles in my regular store, so I go with coconut flakes, cocoa powder, powdered sugar and crushed almonds I happened to have roasted this morning for another recipe. I use pure cocoa powder without any sugar added. the sweetened condensed milk already has enough sugar, so the bitter cocoa is the right combination.
And you know what happened? I have to apologize to not insert how many people this recipe serves at the moment I’m writing this post, because I was not able to count the number of balls I made. I know it was a considerable amount, but I now only have this little plate here. Where did they go?
Hum, I guess I have to make another batch soon (smiles). After all, this could be a wonderful gift for the Valentine’s Day!
- 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
- 4 Tbsp of pure cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp of unsalted butter
- 2 Tbsp coconut flakes
- 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp crushed roasted almonds
- 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
- In a small saucepan over medium heat mixture condensed milk, cocoa powder and butter.
- Cook, stirring constantly (never stop stirring!), until thickened, about 15 minutes.
- Note that the mixture needs to start detaching from the sides of the pan.
- Allow a few more minutes to get even more thickened.
- Pour the mix in a greased dish or in a parchment paper (I prefer the last) and let it cool down completely.
- For better results put it in the fridge for at least one hour or overnight.
- When ready to make the balls, grease your hands with some butter, take a teaspoon of the mix and roll it in your hands to form the little balls.
- Roll the balls in chocolate sprinkles, crystal sugar, crushed almonds, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, coconut flakes or whatever is your favorite cover.
- Place it in small candy cups (optional) and enjoy!
